// 004.1 — PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY

SMALL HUMANS.

HUGE FEELINGS.

A child in a dental chair is not a small adult. They are a whole nervous system walking into a room full of strange sounds, bright lights, and adults wearing masks. The work of pediatric dentistry is not the teeth. The work is the nervous system. Everything else follows.

At Growing Smiles, we treat children from the day the first tooth appears (around 6 months) all the way through the teenage years. We use laser-assisted, needle-free protocols whenever possible — and we do it because a child’s first dental experience shapes every dental experience that follows for the rest of their life.

If the first visit is loud, cold, and scary — we have not just lost this child. We have lost this child’s children.

We call our approach “co-discovery.” Mom or Dad sits beside the chair. The child holds the mirror. We narrate every sound before it happens. We count teeth together. We let them touch the laser (when it’s off) so it stops being mysterious. Curiosity is the antidote to fear.

The result: children who leave wanting to come back. Parents who cry in the parking lot — happy tears, for a change. And a city of young adults who, for the first time in dental history, don’t dread the chair. That’s the real metric. Not how many fillings we filled. How many fears we dissolved.

THE PROTOCOL.

// 02 — EIGHT MOVEMENTS
// 01
WARM WELCOME No waiting room. Child is greeted by name, offered a tour, given a sticker. Room temperature adjusted to their comfort.
// 02
PLAY DISCLOSURE “Show-Tell-Do” — every tool is shown, named, demonstrated, then used. No surprises. The child is in control of the pace.
// 03
GENTLE EXAM A tooth-counting adventure. We count, we shine a light, we look for sugar bugs. Kids hold the mirror and count along with us.
// 04
PARENT CO-DISCOVERY Mom or Dad sits beside the chair the entire visit. We narrate findings in real time. Questions are welcomed, never rushed.
// 05
TREATMENT PLAN Written, prioritized, transparent. We show the costs upfront, offer phased options, and never recommend anything that isn’t needed.
// 06
GENTLE CLEANING Ultrasonic scaling + air polishing. No scraping. No discomfort. Usually the kid’s favorite part — “tickle teeth” is the term we use.
// 07
FLUORIDE IF NEEDED Strawberry or grape varnish, painted on. 60 seconds. Done. We only recommend this when risk assessment actually warrants it.
// 08
REWARD + PHOTO Sticker, high-five, polaroid on the “Brave Wall.” A small ritual that ends the visit on triumph, not tears. Next appointment set together.

THE GOAL
// 04 — PARENT QUESTIONS

FREQUENTLY ASKED.

By their first birthday, or within 6 months of the first tooth appearing (whichever comes first). The first visit is more about acclimation than treatment — usually 10 minutes, no procedures, just a friendly hello.
In 95% of our pediatric cases, yes. The laser replaces the needle for most soft-tissue and many hard-tissue procedures. For the rare cases that do require numbing, we use a topical gel first — no injection, no fear.
No — but we understand the instinct. Waiting usually makes it worse. Bring them in for a “happy visit” — 10 minutes of just meeting us, sitting in the chair, getting a sticker. No procedures, no pressure. Most fear dissolves within one or two such visits.
Always. We practice “parent co-discovery” — you sit beside the chair, you see everything, you hear everything, you ask anything. The only exception is if your own anxiety is making your child more anxious — in which case we’ll talk about it together.
Totally fine. We don’t force it. We try again next visit. We try a different room. We try with you holding them. We try a different time of day. There is no rush. The mouth will open when trust is built — and trust is built in weeks, not appointments.
A first happy visit is ₹500. Routine cleanings + exam + fluoride are typically ₹2,500–4,000. We provide written estimates upfront, accept all major insurance, and offer 0% EMI on treatments over ₹10,000. Money should never be the reason a child doesn’t see a dentist.
