Dr. Mohitaa Mehrotra didn’t open Growing Smiles to drill teeth. She opened it to dismantle a ten-thousand-year-old lie: that the dental chair must be a place of sterile, fluorescent dread. Her clinic is a quiet rebellion — part operating theatre, part dream-space, part laboratory of light.

Trained in King George’s Medical University and sharpened across a decade of laser, pediatric, and endodontic practice, she treats every patient — whether a terrified seven-year-old or a stoic sixty-year-old — as a whole nervous system, not a row of enamel.

Her obsession is not the procedure. The procedure is the easy part. Her obsession is the three seconds before the procedure — the breath, the joke, the eye contact, the moment where fear dissolves and trust takes its place. She calls it choreography. The mouth is the stage. The drill, when it appears at all, is a minor character.

She rejects clinical sterility in favor of bioluminescent mint, ultraviolet, and the warm hum of liquid gold. Not because it photographs well — but because the body responds to color the way it responds to music. The clinic, in her words, is an instrument.

Today, Growing Smiles is Kanpur’s only fully needle-free pediatric practice and the city’s most awarded laser clinic. But Dr. Mohitaa will tell you — and she will, with a smile that has ended more anxieties than any anesthetic — that none of that matters. What matters is the laugh.
